TWO Dollar schoolgirls have raised hundreds for a children’s charity by organising a sell-out bake sale in the town last month.
Astrid Ulrichsen and Tilly Farrow set up their own stall on Saturday September 17, offering a variety of goods such as scones, cupcakes, muffins and homemade jam.
Their entire spread was sold out in a matter of hours and in the process the girls were able to raise an impressive £362.10, which they have since donated to Unicef.
The enterprising 11-year-olds, buoyed by their recent success, are now cooking up a plan for another fundraiser sometime in the near future.
Gillian Farrow, Tilly’s mum, was delighted by their efforts, saying the experience had helped the youngsters to develop a wider view of the world.
She told the Advertiser: “Both girls have an awareness of the plight of other children, such as refugees and things like that.
“They know there lots of children out there who have less than they do.
“They wanted to do something for charity and as they are both quite at baking they thought they would put their skills to the test and chose Unicef because it is exclusive a charity for children.”
Not content with simply taking care of the baking side of the event, the youngsters went out and secured a prime location for the stall and made sure to get the word out well in advance.
Gillian said: “They planned and advertised the whole thing themselves; there was a lot of initiative involved.
“The idea actually first started in the summer and we went up to Perth to pick the strawberries and raspberries to make the jam.
“First they worked out what time and day would have the best footfall and they then went along and spoke with Brian Devlin at the local butchers and he agreed to let them set up outside the shop.
“And the stall sold out really quickly, with people already looking for them on Saturdays now.
“Tilly and Astrid would like to thank the local people of Dollar for their support and are now planning their next fundraiser.”
Butcher Brian Devlin added: “The girls asked if they could set up outside shop because we have a good footfall on a Saturday.
“Obviously, we were delighted to have them here, because it was such a good initiative.
“It’s really great to see kids willing to do something like that for a good cause.
“Anytime there is a fundraiser in Dollar, you’ll always get good support from the community. And the girls certainly go that.
“But it’s a good thing I don’t do cakes here, otherwise I’d be knackered.”
