A believed-to-be armed robber made off with a sum of cash after staging a terrifying raid at a petrol station in Menstrie on Sunday (28 December) evening.

Police are investigating the incident, which happened around 9.50pm at the Jet filling station services in Main Street West. The authorities are looking to trace a lone suspect who is described as “white, in his twenties, around 5ft 6-8ins tall with a slim to medium build.” According to a Police Scotland spokesperson the man walked into the shop of the petrol station brandishing a weapon at a lone member of staff. He then stole a sum of money before leaving the shop and walking off into a westerly direction.

No one was injured in the incident, which left the female member of staff shaken.

Detective Inspector Grant Sangster said: "No staff were harmed during this incident. However, it is believed the suspect may have had some sort of weapon in his hand at the time.

"We are conducting thorough enquiries in the local areas to trace this individual and would urge anyone who can assist in locating him to contact police immediately.

"In addition, anyone with any further information relevant to this investigation is also asked to come forward."

Inspector Charlie Mitchell added: "This was a brazen theft from a community petrol station and thankfully, incidents of this nature are extremely rare.

"Nevertheless, we are treating this very seriously and currently have high-visibility patrols in the area to engage with the public to offer reassurance."

The suspect was wearing a dark coloured puffa style jacket, dark grey trousers and dark coloured footwear.

Police are appealing for members of the public to aid them with their investigation. The spokesperson added: “Anyone who was in the area on Sunday evening and remembers seeing anything suspicious or who has information that can assist officers with their investigation is asked to contact police immediately.” Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
