THERE is more encouraging news for Scottish sport as it was revealed that school pupils across the country have made 6.1 million visits to Active Schools-supported sport and physical activity sessions in the past year.
This is a record high number and a five per cent increase on the previous 12 months.
The figures released by sportscotland, the national agency for sport, also show that during the 2014/15 academic year, the number of activity sessions offered has increased by seven per cent to 333,000, with a wide range of more thanover 100 different sports and activities on offer.
The number of people delivering these sessions also increased to more than 20,000. 
Some 17,500 of themse people are volunteers.
The Active Schools Network is, which is a partnership between sportscotland and the 32 local authorities.
It has been delivering opportunities for school pupils to get involved in sport and physical activity before and after school, and during lunch breaks, and after school over the past decade.
Last year, sportscotland announced a further £50million investment into the network to extend the programme for a further four years.
Active Schools coordinates opportunities for children and young people to participate in sport before school, during lunchtime, and after school.
Active Schools co-ordinators also build partnerships locally to develop links between schools and sports clubs.
