A SEARCH and rescue operation remains ongoing after a man jumped from the Clackmannanshire Bridge during the early hours of Friday morning.

Police say the man, believed to be from Sauchie, fell from the bridge side after a brief car chase shortly before 3am.

Officers in an armed response vehicle observed a blue transit van driving in the opposite direction with one wheel missing.

They turned to pursue and had just activated their blue flashing lights when the van struck the bridge's barriers.

Police say the male driver then exited the vehicle, climbed over the safety railings and entered the water, despite officers' attempts to save him.

Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with  any information which may aid the investigation is urged to come forward.

Chief Inspector Irene Ralston said: "At this time the main focus of this operation is to trace the man, who has not been seen since he went into the water, which was at high tide. We are continuing to keep his family informed and supported.

"The incident happened as officers were in the very initial stages of attempting to make the driver aware of their presence and their concerns over the condition of his van. Anyone with information relevant to this incident is asked to contact police immediately.

"We are also keen to hear from other motorists who may have been on the roadway around the Clackmannanshire Bridge just before 2.50am on Friday morning and saw the blue transit van.

"If you believe you can assist us then please come forward. In the meantime I would like to thank the public for their patience and co-operation while the bridge remains closed."

Police helicopters, the coastguard and members of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have been called in to assist with the search.

The bridge will remain closed for the "foreseeable future" while the operation continues.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
