CLACKMANNANSHIRE will receive a share of £230 million to rebuild Abercromby Primary School.

Cabinet secretary for infrastructure, Keith Brown, visited the Tullibody school today on behalf of the first minister, to welcome the funding announcement.

He said the new Abercromby will be a "modern building that pupils, teachers and the whole community will enjoy for generations to come".

It is one of 19 across Scotland to receive funding as part of the final phase of the £1.8 billion ‘Schools for the Future’ programme.

Mr Brown said: "This government is working hard to improve educational standards across the country to make sure that every child in Scotland has the ability to achieve their potential. Part of that is making sure children have the right physical environment to learn in.

"This announcement is fantastic news for Clackmannanshire. The new Abercromby Primary will be a modern building that pupils, teachers and the whole community will enjoy for generations to come.

“Infrastructure investment is a key part of our strategy to ensuring a prosperous and fair Scotland and since 2007, we have worked with local authorities to rebuild or refurbish 607 schools, resulting in the number of children educated in "poor" or "bad" condition schools falling by 60 per cent.

"In addition to the educational benefits of the new school, it will also provide a boost to the local economy, creating many construction jobs and apprenticeship opportunities.”

The 19 new projects announced will take the overall number of schools being delivered across Scotland to 112.

Since the Schools for the Future programme began it has created an estimated 11,000 construction jobs and 230 apprenticeships.

Clackmannanshire Council leader, councillor Les Sharp, said: "We welcome this funding announcement, which will allow us to bring a modern learning facility to Tullibody.

"The council will be working with our partners and the local community to deliver a project which will help our young people learn well and reach their full potential."

Gemma Boggs, schools programme director at Scottish Futures Trust (SFT), added: "This announcement builds on the huge progress SFT has made managing the Scotland's Schools for the Future programme.

"We are working with all local authorities to achieve the very best value for the investment in their new schools which will be of benefit to thousands of pupils across Scotland, whilst also supporting many local SMEs when construction starts."

Clackmannanshire Council are due to discuss proposals surrounding the establishment of the school, during a council meeting on Thursday, February 4.
