COLLEGE classes in Alloa are cancelled tomorrow, as a result of industrial action taken by some lecturers across the country.

Earlier this month, union members voted for a series of one-day strikes after "no significant progress" was made in ongoing pay negotiations.

Two days next week have been earmarked for additional strike action but it is not yet been confirmed whether classes will go ahead.

The ballot, organised by the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) union which represents lecturers, found 88 per cent of those members who voted wanted to take action.

Larry Flanagan, general secretary for the union, said its members felt "angry and betrayed", adding: "These emphatic votes for strike action are the result of broken promises that were made to lecturers."

EIS rejected a one per cent pay rise, which Colleges Scotland described as the "best possible offer in the current difficult funding situation".

Their statement added: "We will continue working with all of the trade unions to progress harmonisation of pay and conditions across the college sector in Scotland, and to develop our colleges so that they are equipped and staffed for the challenges of the future."

Forth Valley College has confirmed additional strike dates are set down for Tuesday and Wednesday next week and will make a decision on classes nearer the date.

Ken Thomson, principal at Forth Valley College, said: "The EIS Union have proposed a series of dates for industrial action over the coming months.

"Following a review of options, our senior management team decided the college was unlikely to be able to offer a full service on Thursday. Therefore, in the best interests of our students, there will be no classes on this date.

"Following the first day of action, we will review the situation for Tuesday, March 22, and Wednesday, March 23.

"As always our focus is on ensuring we continue to deliver the highest quality learning experiences for our students whilst a resolution is found for this dispute."

The college has confirmed that the Learning Resource Centres will be open as normal, during the day and students and apprentices can access these if required.

However, capacity will be limited and students are advised that there may be industrial action activity taking place on the campus.

Evening classes are also cancelled.
