A MAN was airlifted to hospital today after sustaining a "nasty" leg break while canyoning near Alva.

The Ochils Mountain Rescue Team were called out at around 12.15pm to assist the casualty, said to have suffered a compound fracture in his lower leg.

Due to the difficult terrain and weather conditions, rescuers had to set up a pulley system to raise the man from the "depths of the gorge".

After being stretchered out of the area, he was conveyed to hospital by a Maritime and Coastguard Association (MCA) helicopter.

A spokesperson from the OMRT praised the man's companions and said: "These guys hand been in the gorge for some time and did well to manage the casualty and indeed themselves in very wet conditions before OMRT arrived especially given the fact that they had virtually no warm clothing.

"Thanks to MCA's Sikorsky S-92 crew for providing air support and transferring the casualty to hospital after he had been extracted from the depths of the gorge.

"Thanks also to passers by who always offer assistance to lug gear off the hill. A basic human instant to assist those in need always comes to the fore.

"Finally, we wish the casualty a speedy recovery from a nasty injury."
