INTERNATIONAL Workers' Memorial Day will be commemorated in the Wee County next week.

It is an opportunity for people to gather and recognise those who have lost their lives during their employment.

Every year on April 28, workers and their representatives from all over the world conduct events, demonstrations, vigils and other activities to mark the day.

The Clackmannanshire Trade Union Memorial Committee is hoping locals will help them pay their respects at the memorial stone at Kilncraigs, Greenside Street, Alloa.

At the same time, there will also be tributes all across Scotland, in the likes of Falkirk, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Kirkcaldy, Dundee and Aberdeen.

According to organisers, the memorial day also serves as a "rallying cry to remember the dead, but fight for the living".

Kevin McIntyre, spokesperson for the Clackmannanshire branch of UNISON, said: "On International Workers' Memorial Day we remember those who have died at their work and pledge to fight like hell for living.

"This will be the 10th year Clackmannanshire's trade unions have held an event to mark the occasion, and we would invite the people of Clackmannanshire to join us in front of Kilncraigs at 10.30am on Thursday April 28 to mark this important day."

A number of speakers have been lined up to take part in this year's event.

Expected on the day will be Louise Taggart, Families Against Corporate Killing, Joe McLaren, UCATT, Elaine McPherson, CEO of Clackmannanshire Council and Tina Murphy, Clackmannanshire Council's Provost.

The theme for Workers' Memorial Day 2016 is 'Strong Laws - Strong enforcement - Strong Unions'.
