People are advised to keep their handbags on them, close to their body and zipped, with no valuable items on display - never leave the bag unattended.

Residents should put their handbags in their laps or on the floor, between their feet with a foot on the strap, or place the strap through one leg of the chair, when they are in restaurants or cafés.

Never leave bags in adjacent seats in theatres, pubs or on public transport.

When in restrooms, do not place handbags close to the door or side walls, especially if there is a gap between the walls and the ground – it could be snatched from the outside.

Keep to major, well-lit streets and avoid isolated areas, people are reminded to be aware of their surroundings.

Do not carry large amounts of cash, withdraw only as much as needed at the time.

Look for ATMs located within buildings, supermarkets or other busy locations.

Be mindful of distractions, thieves working in pairs or groups may attempt to divert the prospective victim's attention in order to steal their belongings.

Attach the purse to the handbag with a secure cord and keep mobiles in a zipped, internal pocket.
