PEOPLE are being encouraged to take part in a swimming challenge and raise funds for charity.

Swim for Autism is back for a fifth year and organisers are using classic films as a theme for this year's challenge.

Scotland's stunning scenery has been featured in many films like The Da Vinci Code, The 39 Steps, Skyfall and more and Scottish Autism is challenging people to swim to the country's film locations, figuratively.

By swimming 21 lengths in a 25 metre pool, participants can tick a location off their list of 78, e Alloa Amateur Swimming Club took part in the 2015 challengearning a gold medal after nearly 41 km.

Karen Wilson, fundraising manager at Scottish Autism, said: “Everyone is very excited about the theme for this year’s Swim for Autism - there is huge interest in Scottish film locations at the moment with the likes of Outlander being enjoyed all over the world.

“Swimming is obviously a wonderful way to improve physical fitness, and for individuals with autism it can also help lower anxiety and enhance socialisation, as well as increasing happiness and self esteem.

“If you are not a swimmer you can, however, walk, run or cycle the distances - it is definitely the taking part that counts.”

So far, individuals, clubs and groups have raised more than £15,000 for the Alloa-based charity. This year's money will go to New Struan School in town. The residential and day school provides education for young people affected by an autism spectrum disorder.
