THE Scottish SPCA is appealing to local wildlife lovers to donate newspapers to help sick and injured hedgehogs in their care.

Staff at the charity’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross have had a record number of hedgehogs in their care this year and are currently caring for 90 hedgehogs.

And now the organisation are asking members of the public to consider handing over old newspapers which they can use to help care for their spikey visitors.

Centre manager Colin Seddon said: “This is the busiest year we have ever had with regards to hedgehogs coming through our doors.

“Since January, we’ve cared for over 1000 sick and injured hedgehogs.

“We have also treated more wildlife casualties so far this year than ever before and are heading for another record breaking number by the end of 2016.

“We are desperate for locals to donate any newspapers to us as they are useful cage liners and we use these daily for the thousands of hedgehogs and other wild animals that come into our care every year.

“Locals are always extremely generous in helping out when we are in need and each and every donation will be gratefully received.”

Anyone able to help the Scottish SPCA’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre can hand items into the centre at Fishcross, Alloa, FK10 3AN.

The centre operates seven days a week and donations can be handed in between 9am and 4.30pm.
