A WEE COUNTY native is following his dream in the world of theatre and is currently touring the UK with a brand new production.

Gregor Scott, originally from Coalsnaughton, was on stage last month for the European premiere of Big: The Musical, based on the classic Hollywood fantasy comedy starring Tom Hanks.

Gregor, 31, is working with singer, dancer and musician Jay McGuiness from boy band The Wanted, understudying his lead role of 12-year-old Josh Baskin – ready to step into his red converse shoes if needed.

On a usual night Gregor is in the ensemble; he could be playing a number of roles from a homeless man to a dad or an office worker, singing and dancing in big numbers.

Big: The Musical, a Michael Rose production, first went on stage at the Theatre Royal Plymouth last month, with Gregor adding: “[The] Plymouth run was amazing.

“It’s the first time I’ve been in a new production of a show so for instance, when I was in Wicked or Legally Blonde, I knew what to expect as far as the response from the audience was going to be, but this was totally new to the UK.

“It went down a storm, we got standing ovations every performance and the reviews have been great.”

The cast also recorded an album for the show two weeks ago in London, something that was completely new for the Clacks actor. He said it was an amazing experience and the record should be out in a couple of weeks.

Gregor went to Coalsnaughton Primary and Alva Academy as well as the Wee County’s Forefront Stage School, where it all began back in 2000.

He added: “It was at Forefront that I got the ‘bug’ for performing and it just went from there really.”

A classic movie placed 42nd on the American Film Institute’s 100 Years...100 Laughs list, the story of Big had previously been turned into a Broadway musical, which saw nearly 200 performances in the late 90s.

Gregor said: “It really is a great film and one that my age group all love so when I found out I was going to be in the musical I was over the moon.

“The feedback has been great, we actually met the writers David Shire and Richard Maltby; they flew over from Broadway to watch the show in Plymouth and they loved what we have done with it, it really was an honour to perform and meet them.”

Gregor and the cast will soon travel to Dublin where the show will be on stage at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre for a month.

It is expected the show will then move to London’s West End – dates are yet to be confirmed.
