BOOKWORMS in the Borders celebrated Scotland's top reading event last week.

Pupils got the chance to take part in Book Week Scotland, which took place at local primary schools and libraries across the region.

During the event, children were each given a bag of three books by the Scottish Book Trust to promote the Read, Write, Count literacy and numeracy campaign aimed at children in P1 to P3.

Schoolchildren in P1 at Balmoral, Burgh and Langlee primary schools in Galashiels also took part in a special family learning session, organised by staff from the Council’s Community Learning and Development team.

The event saw pupils and parents engage in a storytelling session then work together to make a story box of items relating to one of the books in their bag.

Councillor Sandy Aitchison SBC’s Executive Member for Education said: "This was a wonderful example of children and parents coming together to experience learning in a way that was creative, educational and of course, fun.

"The book chosen as the focus of the afternoon – ‘Shark in the Park on a Windy Day’ - provided plenty of scope for inspiration with a great variety of snapping sharks and duck ponds and even telescopes being produced.

"I am sure everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon and went away eager to continue with their reading experiences."
