BUDDING young artists from the Wee County had their chance to shine when an exhibition showcasing their work opened in Alloa last week.

The display, titled 'Collaboration', went on show in The Swarm Gallery at Resonate Arts House on North Castle Street last Friday, January 13, and includes works from Clackmannanshire and Stirling S6 students.

It was opened by Councillor George Matchett, education convener at Clackmannanshire Council, who praised the pupils involved for their efforts in promoting the talents and skills of the young artists in the area.

The pieces of art were produced during two weekends of workshops at the University of Stirling as well as at Resonate last year.

The series of activities brought together students who were considering further studies in the visual arts and design. They immersed themselves in practice over four days to expand their knowledge and experience as well as to create pieces suitable for their portfolios.

Bringing a wealth of experience, Forth Valley College tutor and artist Ewan John led the sessions at the university and gave a taste of what a day at art school might look like.

He also helped the students with lots of hints and tips on how to prepare their portfolios and explained what colleges are looking for.

During that weekend, the pupils spent two days focusing on objects they had brought along, exploring and drawing them in a number of different ways.

Resonate became involved with the initiative for the first time this year to encourage and support youngsters in local schools.

Tutor Angela Beardsley and Resonate volunteers hosted a second weekend of workshops, focusing on design and giving the students a number of challenges in which they gained experience in team working under time pressure and with fixed resources.

Other activities looked at what is not usually available in most schools; glass fusing, pyrography and laser printing.

Angela said: “What a super group of young people. They threw themselves into every activity and co-operated with each other and the tutor brilliantly.

“The enthusiasm and excitement of the students were amply demonstrated when they all requested a repeat of the workshops in the future.”
