A FISHCROSS couple are set to tackle the West Highland Way in a fundraising charge for the Hawkhill Community Centre.

This April Andrew and Kirsten Huggan will complete the near-100-mile trek in the space of a little more than a week.

They have already planned their stops, as well as a little rest and recovery period in Fort William after they are finished.

The two have maintained links with the community centre, based on Hillcrest Drive in Alloa, and hope their latest "adventure" will help volunteers maintain their services.

Andrew, 32, told the Advertiser: "Hawkhill are always looking for funds and there is a lot of good work the centre does with kids and we just wanted to help in some way.

"I hope I'd never be in the position to need some of their services, like the foodbank, but it's good to know there is someone there for those who are in desperate need.

"My wife's brother and my dad's friend have helped out there before, and my wife used to do a make your own jewellery class there. We try to make donations when we can.

"We're planning to do the walk in April and we thought if we're doing it then we might as well try and raise some money for something good at the same time."

The duo will begin their trek from Milngavie on April 19, and are planning to finish the full 96 miles in eight days.

Andrew said: "This will definitely be the biggest challenge for me, physically.

"I'm not the fittest person in the world; the most I've ever walked in a single day is 16 miles.

"But then that was just the one day; we'll have to see how it goes over the full 96 miles."

He added: "I've been walking since around 2004, but I got married recently, so my wife Kirsten has been coming on my adventures with me now.

"She's looking forward to it and she seems more excited than me about the whole thing.

"I was waiting to have everything booked up and ready to go before I started getting excited. But I'm totally buzzing for it now."

The Hawkhill Community Centre caters for around 110 kids each week, who attend for homework and youth clubs.

Each child gets a hot meal, while families can also make use of the foodbank if needed.
