CHILDREN at Clackmannan Primary welcomed around 50 guests to a Burns Supper last week.

It is thought to have been the first such event held at the school and youngsters pulled out all the stops to make sure it was a good one.

Primary six pupils took responsibility for every aspect of planning and delivering the celebration: making phone calls to organise the catering with Class Cuisine, a donation of tablet from Mrs Tilly's, designing tickets and holding a raffle to help keep the cost of entry down.

On Thursday afternoon, they set tables in the hall, laid out cutlery and folded napkins at each place.

Susan Elins, primary 6 class teacher, said: "That evening, the children welcomed around fifty guests, seated them, served their meals and then hosted a full programme of entertainment, which included: the Address to the Haggis; The Immortal Memory researched, written and performed by the whole class; a spirited version of Macpherson’s Rant, sung by The Gallows, the latest boyband sensation; a poignant recitation of To a Mouse by Alfie Denney and William Speirs; a beautiful rendition of Killiecrankie by The Lassies o Scotland, the newest girlband to come out of Clackmannan; rounded off by an extremely animated Toast to the Lassies by the P6 laddies, replied to in equally exuberant fashion by the P6 lassies.

"Through this context for learning, the children have acquired practical skills and knowledge which will serve them well in the future, as well as giving them opportunities to work collaboratively with others towards a specific objective.

"My overriding impression on Thursday evening, though, was that they were thoroughly enjoying themselves."

There was a huge amount of positive feedback from parents following the event, with hopes that next year will bring something similar.

Claire Conacher said: "We had a fantastic time. Well done Mrs Elins and P6 you were all fabulous."

Janet Bisland said: "What a great night, the kids did us proud."

Meanwhile, Arlene Graham particularly enjoyed the toasts.

She said: "Had a fantastic night, well done to all the children who worked so hard, especially loved the toasts to the laddies and lassies. Mrs Elins well done on everything you did, hope this will be a yearly occurrence."

The primary six pupils themselves also had a great time during the event.

Alfie Denney said: "I loved it and I hope there’s another one next year."

Loklan Hay said: "It was amazing. I loved every part but my favourite was the Toast to the Lassies and their reply."

Gemma Davies added: "It was fun to plan and it turned out really good."
