THE Alloa Advertiser is calling for all central Scotland residents to back the growing #KeepSafeDrive campaign.

Dozens have already given their support to a paper petition after seeing the Safe Drive, Stay Alive show during last Thursday's public screening.

There were impassioned pleas from among those signing with one woman describing the show as "really eye-opening" and another person adding: "Everyone needs to see this."

One man wrote: "Hard-hitting and really does leave a lifetime message," while another said: "I have seen the positive impact it has on young people."

More have added their names since Thursday, with an online version now available for anyone wishing to support the cause.

After signing the digital petition, Clair Coutts said: "My son Matthew's story is told every year. We are sadly a statistic of a young one killed through a [road traffic collision] and it would break my heart that something this powerful would stop. In memory of my son; I dearly hope this continues."

The Safe Drive, Stay Alive roadshow teaches youngsters about the dangers of careless or inattentive driving, and has reached out to around 40,000 school pupils over the last ten years.

However, its future remains under threat as it currently receives no funding from local government towards its £23,000-24,000 costs.

MSPs Alexander Stewart and Alex Rowley attended last Thursday's show and both pledged their support to the Advertiser campaign.

Green MSP Mark Ruskell (pictured) also gave the cause his backing and was out in Alloa last week asking members of the public to sign the paper petition.

He said: “The Safe Drive Stay Alive roadshow provides an invaluable educational experience for young drivers which undoubtedly saves lives, and at a tiny cost to local authorities.

“Our local councils would only need to use a tiny fraction of the extra funds Green MSPs secured for them during budget negotiations to invest in this life saving programme.”

Bryan Quinn, green candidate for Clackmannanshire South, also attended the public Safe Drive showing last Thursday and was out helping to gather signatures the very next day.
