BUSINESSES in the Borders are being encouraged to make the most of a work-based qualification to tackle skill gaps and support employees to develop on the job.

Funding for the Modern Apprenticeship Programme comes from a new levy that came into effect on the April 6.

It sees all Borders employers with annual salary bills of more than £3 million making a financial contribution.

The concept, which has been in operation for a number of years, has already realised many success stories across the region.

Vytas Brizinskas, senior chef de partie at the Roxburghe Hotel near Kelso, told us: “I am glad I did the apprenticeship rather than go to college.

“Working while you are learning your skills gives you a greater insight what you are doing and the realities of doing your job.

"It has been the right way for me to learn.”

By delivering benefits to both the employer, with staff who develop skills that meet the needs of the business, and the apprentice, who can earn while they learn, it is hoped more people take up the opportunity.

Sarah Dalrymple, managing director of SD Consultancy - the only independent Borders based provider of Modern Apprenticeships - believes the positive impact of the scheme for both business and apprentice is immeasurable.

She explained: "They are a very effective way for candidates to learn, work and earn, and it also enables the employers to identify training and a line of progression which their teams can work towards."

Sarah, who started her career as a head chef in a five-star hotel in South Africa, saw first-hand how Modern Apprenticeships benefitted both business and apprentice.

She was so convinced, she re-trained as a Modern Apprentice Assessor.

Initially offering qualifications in Hospitality, the prospectus has expanded to include Business and Administration, Customer Service, Sports and Leisure, World Host and Personal License Holder Certificate, with courses available to any Borders business or candidate.

All the qualifications offered are carried out with the candidate, on a one-to- one basis, with assessments, support and training forming part of their qualification.

Sarah added: "We have had great success here in the Borders."
