A CLACKS mum has smashed a mammoth fundraising challenge, which saw her cycle 969 miles, well ahead of schedule.

Earlier this year, Marion Riddell embarked on a mission to cover the distance equivalent of going from Land's End to John o'Groats.

She decided to raise money for Lochies School – where her daughter Isla is a pupil – to help with the £10,000 needed for a new, modified mini-bus for the youngsters.

She set-off with the intention of conquering the feat before the start of the school term in August, but managed to complete it on Sunday, May 7 with a final 18 mile jaunt up to Cleish, which included a demanding hill cycle.

The Pool of Muckhart resident has also managed to surpass her original fundraising target of £1000 and is still taking in donations in the hope of reaching £1750.

She said: “People have been absolutely super and it's been great just to see the kindness of people really.

“So just a big, huge thank-you to everybody who has donated – it really means a lot.”

Since beginning the challenge in the middle of January, Marion has been clocking up the miles by travelling to the likes of Bridge of Allan, Auchterarder, Bridge or Earn, Braco and Culross in all weathers.

While on her travels she has met some lovely people, who were all happy to help with directions, or with the odd lost water bottle.

She said: "You realise how nice people are on the whole when you do something like this."

A self-confessed summer cyclist, Marion said the task was a little daunting to begin with.

But she has managed to cycle more than 1000 miles since the start of the year and has enjoyed the experience.

She said: “It's obviously been lovely to see great countryside.

“The weather has been pretty kind which makes a difference and it's also very therapeutic in a way.”

Marion, who is a member of the parent council at Lochies, was motivated to fundraise to show her appreciation.

She said the school goes "above and beyond" and Isla loves attending.
