A DOLLAR girl cycled from Edinburgh to Glasgow to help a man who suffered severe traumatic brain injury in a horrific car crash.

Rachel van der Merwe as well as pal Amanda Paterson from Glenrothes, both 19, hopped on their tandem bike to help Aberdeenshire man Luke Wood.

Luke, the boyfriend of their best mate Amber Johnston, was involved in an accident nearly a year ago. He spent 30 days in intensive care, six months in the neurophysiology ward and is now in the brain injury rehabilitation centre.

Without a fund of an ambitious £15,000, he faces being stuck inside his rural family home.

Girlfriend Amber has been raising the money for an off-road wheelchair that can handle rough terrain. His family is also spending thousands of pounds to build an extension to their house which would be more suitable for his condition.

The special 4x4 wheelchair would also allow Luke to stand, aiding his lungs and digestion so he is more resilient to infections.

The money will also help buy other various pieces of equipment needed for his care.

Thanks to the efforts of many generous donors, as well as local girl Rachel, the gofundme.com fundraising campaign has nearly managed to reach its goal.

At the time of writing last week, only £30 was missing to hit the target – the cash was raised in around 30 days.
