IN AN EFFORT to tackle scams around the Wee County, Clackmannanshire's Citizens Advice Bureau is launching a major campaign.

“Scams are very common and can affect absolutely anyone”, that is the message from the local wing of the CAB as it embarks on Scams Awareness Month in the hopes it will save people from losing hundreds, or even thousands of pounds.

Jonny Miller, managing director of the local office, said: “Our message to Clackmannanshire area people throughout this month is that you need to be vigilant and watch out for scams and there are some easy steps you can take to protect yourself and family.

“But we also want people to know that help is available and that if you are a victim of a scam you should report it so we can try and stop it hurting others.”

As part of the effort, Jonny and his team will be sharing information and messages on social media and will also be distributing posters and leaflets. They will, too, hold an event at the Carers Forum next Wednesday, July 19.

The managing director added: “Scams are very common and can affect absolutely anyone. And they can cost people hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

“It's heart-breaking for our advisers to see local people conned out of their money – especially when scams can so often be avoided.”

While anyone can be affected, the CAB will be focusing on particular groups each week, starting with people who are “life-established” - in work and financially secure.

Jonny said: “Such people might feel they are not vulnerable to scams, but in fact we often see people at the CAB who have been targeted precisely because they are in that situation – for example by scams offering pensions or investments.”

“Dating websites are also rife with scammers these days”, he added.

The general advice is to always be vigilant, people should take time before making any decisions to part with their cash and “if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is”.
