ALVA ACADEMY has thrown its annual end of year dance show as it says goodbye to several of its graduates.

Hundreds of parents packed into the school on Wednesday, June 20, to watch pupils from S1-S6 show off the moves they have been learning all year.

The school is renowned for its dancing abilities and even has its own professional choreographer who has helped the pupils hone their skills throughout the year, culminating in being selected for a prestigious dance show in Glasgow.

Eilidh Abernethy, a PE teacher at the school, told the Advertiser how much effort goes into the event.

She said: “We work towards the show all year through curricular and extracurricular classes. We are lucky enough to have a professional choreographer working with our school of dance, Lisa Kennedy, as well as a group of talented dance captains so we have a lot to show by the end of the year.

“This year we were lucky enough to be a part of Go Dance in Glasgow where selected groups have a 15-minute slot to show off anything they like.

“We were one of only five schools to be selected for this prestigious show, amongst performing arts schools and dance colleges from all over Scotland, so we were very pleased to be involved with such talent.

The performance in Alva featured a vast array of different styles from cheerleading to a solo contemporary piece by David Morgan, who is leaving the school to pursue dancing professionally.

Eilidh continued: “At our Evening of Dance we showed off the piece we took to Glasgow which was inspired by different colours and what they mean to the dancers.

“We were also inspired by movies such as The Greatest Showman and Mamma Mia. We have also branched into lots of different genres such as pom dance, contemporary, jazz, hip hop and lyrical."

Eilidh paid tribute to everyone who made the show, and the school of dance, such a success, with a special mention for the outgoing pupils.

She said: “The seniors who are leaving are David Morgan, Megan McKenna, Ellie Galindo, Aimie Bird, Megan Meldrum, Robbie Brandriff, Carie Hughes and Shevonne Black.

“They have all been committed dancers for their full time at Alva Academy and will be missed so much. A huge thank you to all of them for all their hard work.”
