A LEGO display opened in Alloa yesterday (Tuesday).

Brick artist Warren Elsmore and his team have set up an exhibition at the Liberal Club on Mar Street after being invited by Clackmannanshire Third Sector Interface (CTSi).

Entry is by donation and people are currently being invited to take part in a Big Build by putting together a section of a large model.

The model is a red squirrel, the small version of which can be seen in the picture, and looks very similar to CTSi volunteering mascot Super Sandy.

Those who might miss out on the opportunity will have another chance to get involved next week, when a giant mosaic will be built by the community over three days.

This will include an accessible-friendly day at Hawkhill Community Centre on Thursday, July 26.

A lifelong fan of LEGO, Edinburgh-based Warren Elsmore and his crew were busy setting it all up on Monday at the arts and crafts-style Liberal Club, which CTSi has taken over this summer.

He told the Advertiser: “Everybody here is brilliant and helpful and it’s a lovely venue to be in, it’s such a beautiful building right in the middle of the town centre.

“We are really looking forward to running the exhibition, I hope everybody enjoys it.”

Those visiting will also have the chance to enjoy a treat with community interest company the Playpen Café popping up on a daily basis.

Alongside a tasty menu, they have a space full of kids’ corners with plenty of toys and games.

Warren has taken his bricks across the globe but being so close to home means he was able to bring some big pieces that normally do not get to travel.

He said: “There’s a big funfair here, which is one of my personal things I’ve been working on.

“Theresa (a member of the team) brought her garden – it’s a beautiful LEGO garden she’s been working on, which has got some pieces that are 40-50-years-old.

“These are really nice personal pieces that we can’t take all over the world.”

Warren does not use any custom pieces, all of it is available from the catalogue, or was at some point in the past.

CTSi business manager Anthea Coulter was delighted to see it all come together and said it was brilliant to see so many people getting involved with volunteering, particularly youngsters.

The organiser hopes enthusiasts will flock to Alloa to see the builds from all over the place.

She said: “This is the centrepiece of the Year of Young People so it’s particularly encouraging that there’s young people coming in, we are going to be promoting volunteering to them.

“We’ve had a huge rise in youth volunteering over the past year and we want to continue that trend and (promote) the Saltire Award.

“The younger people start volunteering, the longer they stay volunteers.”
