AN ALLOA man landed himself in court after helping himself to money from his place of work.

Jeevan Kalsi appeared in the dock last week, after taking £760, medication and alcohol from Medwyn Stores in Alloa on November 7, 2017.

The 31-year-old admitted the charge and on Thursday Alloa Sheriff Court heard that he had worked at the store for around two years at the time of the offence.

On the date in question the accused, a key holder, had let himself into the shop in the early hours of the morning and removed bank notes from the safe.

He also took a number of bottles of alcohol, some paracetamol and additional money from the till.

Toni Pentecost, defending, said her client had been through some difficult times when the crime had taken place.

She told the court that before he had entered the store an argument had broken out with his then partner.

He had forgot to lift his wallet when he left the property and could not get back in to retrieve it.

She outlined that he did not want to bother family and had thought he could take the money from his employer and pay it back.

She acknowledged to the court the seriousness of the matter and the fact that he had been in a "position of trust".

Ms Pentecost said when things get difficult he sometimes struggles to deal with his emotions and things "just go haywire".

In her submission, she also detailed how Kalsi, of Earn Court, had contacted the owner shortly after the incident to attempt to arrange a repayment.

Sentencing, Sheriff David Mackie told him "your remorse and contrition is clear".

However. he added there was not getting away from the fact that it was a serious matter and issued a community payback order.

Kalsi received a supervision period of two years, unpaid work of 160 hours across 12 months and a compensation requirement to repay £760.
