A TILLICOULTRY schoolboy has shaved off all his hair in a show of support for his mum and those who are battling cancer.

Despite coping with what was one of the toughest times in his life, Ciaran Calder made a bold decision and immediately began thinking about the needs of others.

When his mum Mhairi was diagnosed with breast cancer he set out to organise a Brave the Shave event for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Although she was treated quickly, he was struck by a desire to raise money so others who are less fortunate can receive help battling the disease.

So, he came up with a plan and had his head shaved for the cause on Monday, August 6, which was the first day of radiotherapy treatment for Mhairi, who is on the road to full recovery.

She said: "Ciaran told me by text out the blue so it was a complete surprise but I was touched and proud of him.

"We're amazed at how much he's raised in such a short time and extremely grateful to everyone for their generosity."

Ciaran, 12, who will be going into S1 at Alva Academy later this month, a school renowned for its Macmillan fundraising, has more than trebled his target.

Initially, he set out to gather a total of £300 for the organisation, but is now sitting with more than £1000 on his sponsorship page.

The youngster said: "I wanted to do something to help my mum and others so I thought of shaving my head to try to raise some money.

"I was nervous when doing it and felt relieved when it was done but I'm very glad I did it."

Macmillan provides specialist healthcare, information and financial support to those who have been affected by cancer.

It also undertakes research, provides a listening ear to those who need to talk, and can offer advice and resources.

Following the fundraiser, Mhairi, who wants people to be aware of the need to check for lumps associated with breast cancer, has recognised how crucial these charities can be for those who need them.

She added: "I'm now more aware and have a greater understanding of just how important charitable organisations are and how much they benefit people."
