OVER 60s donned their sports gear and took to the Indodrill Stadium in Alloa for two days of training sessions.

The walking football players took the opportunity to recapture some of the skills of their youth on Wednesday, August 8 and Thursday, August 9.

Around 20 of them took to the pitch for drills, brushing up on their attacking and defending, let by coaches Richard Sinclair and Bobby Hulston.

The training camp, which included people from the Alloa and Tullibody teams, alongside Stenhousemuir, was spearheaded by three local players.

Derek Young, Stuart Morrison and Arthur Duncan decided to put together the event following a one-off gathering for over 65s earlier this year.

"It was quite intense for older guys they had us working hard," Derek said.

"Everybody got something out of it. In the sessions they covered defending, attacking, movement of the ball, reading the game.

"We got some one-on-one coaching and tactics was in there as well."

Last week the development manager for the Scottish Football Association (SFA) Richard Wilson visited the players for a talk and to watch a game.

They were also treated to catering at the venue and Derek said Alloa, which has offered plenty of support to date, has once again "come up trumps" for its help.

Walking football is a low impact, low contact version of the sport for those over the age of 50 and has really taken off over the last few years.

A number of teams have popped up across the UK and, locally, these form the Walking Football Forth Valley network.

However, as the activity has grown, so too has the disparity in ages – with some players two decades or more apart.

With this realisation, a friendly session was held in May for older generations and players have been building on the success of this.

Along with last week's event, during games held at Alloa on Friday people are now split off according to skills and ages to level the playing field.

Derek said: "It's made a huge difference. What we have found is that people that are in that later stage are enjoying it better."

Sessions for the the Alloa team are at the Indodrill Stadium on Mondays 10-11am, while Tullibody are at the Civic Centre in Tullibody on Tuesdays, 11am-noon, then the Indodrill on Fridays, 10-11am.
