AROUND 60 new homes could be built on the land opposite the Speirs Centre as plans to revamp the town centre are proposed.

The makeshift car park off Primrose Street could finally be transformed into major development, featuring three and four storey buildings.

It could provide “much needed” social housing and reinforce the urban fabric of the town centre.

The site encompasses the brownfield site accessible from Primrose Street on the west, including the car park behind the former Co-op building on the Speirs Centre side of the access road.

The car park closer to the main road of King Street does not form a part of the site in question.

Developers will look to create 25 parking spaces for residents behind the Drysdale Street commercial properties, while also providing a “high quality” open space next to the library, which could be used for civic events.

Currently, the vision is to use a mix of red and buff bricks for the external walls so the new structure can blend with the Speirs Centre and other adjacent properties.

Those behind the plans are hoping to submit their full proposals to the local authority in October this year, when the public will have opportunities to formally support or object to the development.

The concept is currently on show at the Speirs Centre, and Alloa residents will have the chance today (Wednesday, August 22) to discuss the proposed development at a drop-in session at the Speirs Centre from 3-7pm.

Consultants Bracewell Stirling are sharing plans on behalf of Kingdom Housing Association and are looking for feedback before a detailed blueprint is officially lodged with Clackmannanshire Council.
