CLACKS MSP Keith Brown has celebrated the one year anniversary of the Scottish Government's baby box scheme by paying a visit to expectant Alloa mum, Fiona Law.

The box provides parents with some essential items for their newborn children, including a thermometer, play mat, toys and clothing.

Keith Brown said: "The SNP is determined that every child, regardless of their circumstances, should get the best start in life and Scotland’s Baby Box is just one way we are making that happen.

“The Baby Box is a welcome gift for every baby born in Scotland and over the past year I have heard from many constituents about the difference the box and its contents has made to their lives."

The scheme, which originated in Finland, was first trialled in Orkney and Clackmannanshire at the start of the new year in 2017.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon personally handed out the first baby boxes in the Wee County at the time.

The scheme proved hugely successful, and has since been rolled out across Scotland with over 52,000 baby boxes being delivered so far and a 100% satisfaction rate.

The Scottish Government hopes the box will improve the life chances of the children who receive them, with all new babies eligible for one.

Fiona Law, whose baby is due in September said: “I was really excited to receive the baby box this week. I knew roughly what the contents of box would be however I was really impressed when I started to open it.

“I love the little jacket with the ears on the hood and the play mat. When I opened the play mat I couldn’t help but think about watching my baby grow and develop on the mat from tummy time to us lying back having a wee cuddle and reading a book to him.”
