WEATHER warnings are in place around the Wee County today, September 19, with wind gusts up to 75mph expected.

The Met Office issued an amber warning for wind across central Scotland with public transport possibly facing longer journey times and cancellations as a result.

Some damage to buildings is also possible with tiles blowing of roofs while falling trees or branches are also possible.

There is also a risk of injuries and danger to life from flying debris and some roads and bridges may have to close.

Power cuts may also occur, these could affect other services like mobile phone coverage.

Electricity distributor SP Energy Networks also issued advice in the “rare event” of an outage.

Residents should have the national 105 power cut helpline or the 0800 092 9290 SP Energy Networks emergency helpline close to hand.

A battery powered torch should also be easily accessible so residents can make their way around the house safely and check the fuse box.

Mobile phones should be kept charged and an analogue telephone can act as a great backup as it does not run off the main supply.

If power is cut, people are advised to avoid opening fridges and freezers excessively, this will help keep them cold for a longer time.

Powered equipment like TVs, laptops, heaters and cookers should also be unplugged as householders may forget about them when electricity supplies are restored.

If electricity is crucial to a resident’s health, for instance they use powered medical equipment at home, or if there are children aged five or under, people can join the Priority Services Register by calling 0330 1010 167.

Craig Arthur, distribution director at SP Energy Networks, said: “Even though power cuts are rare events for most people, during times of high winds they become more likely, making it important for everybody to be prepared.

“We have a team of engineers on hand 24/7 who will fix any power outages but the sooner we know about it the quicker it can be resolved.

“You can report any power cuts to us by calling the new national emergency helpline 105 or SP Energy Networks emergency helpline 0800 092 9290.”

The Met Office amber warning is in place until 10pm on Wednesday September 19.
