A YOUNG care worker from Clacks has been awarded for the great start she has made in the industry after being named Carer of the Month.

Amy Brown, who is from Tillicoultry, won the award at Mears Care at Home, Alva, last month having only landed her first role in March of this year.

The 20-year-old started her career as a care worker having previously worked in retail for three and a half years while she completed her SVQ qualifications in management.

The former Alva Academy student said her past experience of caring while at home was what inspired her to take up the profession.

She said: “I was looking for a more rewarding job working directly with people.

"Having cared for my mum for many years, I realised that was something I am good at and enjoy.

“Working for Mears doesn’t feel like a real job, it’s more like being part of a big family where everyone is equal.

"Although I am fairly new to this line of work, there is always someone available to answer any queries I have.”

A family member of one service user under Amy said that the Hillfoots woman had "made such a difference to my mum’s life".

The testimony went on: "She has developed a great bond with her and despite the fact my mum has dementia and can become quite distressed, Amy, although young in years, and relatively new, has such a calming effect on mum.”

Amy provides support for more than 30 people in Tillicoultry, Dollar and Coalsnaughton for Mears, which originated in the Wee County and has grown to have 20 offices in Scotland.

Susan McCormack, local manager at the firm in Alva, praised the qualities she brings to the job.

She said: “Although Amy started with Mears not having worked for a care at home company before, she showed enthusiasm, kindness and consideration for others, and a passion for working in care.”

Amy is also keen to develop and embraces any opportunity to undertake any training that allows this.

The company encourages and provides staff training and development and Amy is currently working towards SVQ Level 2 qualification in health and social care.

Meanwhile, Mears are currently recruiting for a number of full time and part time roles for drivers and non-drivers alike.
