AN “ARROGANT” man who hurled verbal abuse at police officers has been jailed.

Liam Meechan appeared at Alloa Sheriff Court on Thursday, September 20, having pleaded guilty to one charge last month.

Susannah Hutchison, prosecuting, told the court that at around 6pm on November 26 of last year the accused was drinking at The Inn, in Tullibody, and left around 8pm with no issues.

Ms Hutchison continued: “At 11pm he returned intoxicated and covered in mud. He was repeatedly refused service and was asked to leave but ignored staff.

“Due to his behaviour he was ushered out by staff, but became aggressive.”

In the midst of being ejected, Meechan smashed a window at the pub, prompting police to attend.

When officers arrived, Meechan shouted: “I am going to f*** your eyeballs out ya c***.”

After being arrested, he began smashing his head off the cage of the police van, before unleashing another verbal tirade towards officers, shouting: “F*** off, ya p***y b******s.”

Kristina Kelly, defending the 22-year-old, told the court that her client, who is a door-to-door salesman, had been punched earlier in the evening.

Ms Kelly added that her client regrets the homophobic abuse he shouted, given that a member of his family is gay.

The damage to the pub was £175.

The court also heard that the accused had recently finished a community payback order with supervision.

Sheriff Wyllie Robertson felt there was only one outcome appropriate for Meechan, of Wood Avens, Tullibody.

He said: “Given your record and arrogant attitude, the only disposal left is custody.”

He was sentenced to five months in prison.
