Starbucks and KFC could be set to open new drive-thru stores as part of the Glasgow Harbour development.

The big-name duo are being lined up to take over a derelict site on Castlebank Street, between the Glasgow Harbour flats and the Clydeside expressway.

Glasgow Harbour Developments Ltd, is currently in the process of transforming the area around the Riverside Museum after 1,100 apartments were built at the former Meadowside Granary site 10 years ago.

If approved, the new takeaway stores will sit close to the proposed £100m Lifestyle Outlets Glasgow Harbour site, which is expected to be considered this year.

In a letter to city bosses, Tom McInally, the agent representing Glasgow Harbour Developments, said: “The proposed development will transform disused, vacant land into vibrant and welcoming drive thru café and restaurant units thus creating a safer environment for local residents by encouraging footfall in the area and increasing activity on the site and throughout surrounding streets.

“At present, there is little activity on the streets that surround the site. The proposed development will create a welcoming, safe and pleasant environment for people living in the surrounding area.

“This development will increase both footfall and lighting within the area, making streets busier and more well-lit for pedestrians.

“It is considered important to note that in terms of the Glasgow Harbour masterplan that formed part of the outline planning consent, granted in 2001, the site in question was also clearly identified as a development site.

“It is also of some importance that ownership of the application site was transferred to Glasgow Harbour as a development site within the contract for the transfer of land owned by Glasgow Harbour to allow development of the Riverside Museum.”

The Glasgow Harbour masterplan involves a substantial investment in infrastructure, the creation of hundreds of waterfront homes, retail and leisure opportunities, as well as a commercial district.

The new planning application comes just months after the developers submitted proposals to create a massive shopping and entertainment outlet at Glasgow Harbour.

Lifestyle Outlets Glasgow Harbour is set to include more than 100 retail stores, 20 restaurants and cafes, a waterfront promenade, a state-of-the-art cinema, gym and family leisure facilities, public squares and major event space.
