IDEAS for a community sensory garden in Sauchie may soon become a reality thanks to a near-£20,000 funding boost.

Sauchie Gardening Group, a part of Sauchie Community Group, is set to create an accessible-to-all quiet place where locals can meet, rest and have a chat.

The project will be taken forward thanks to £19,860 from the Postcode Local Trust, through the Postcode Lottery, and will include paths built to accommodate wheelchairs and pushchairs and more.

In addition, the garden will also include a sensory section with hopes it will be enjoyed by all, but especially people suffering from dementia.

Driving the idea forward was the need to serve an ageing population with many residents no longer able to maintain their own gardens.

A spokesperson for Sauchie Gardening Group said: “We look forward to welcoming children to plant and grow vegetables and flowers in the garden, educating them in the fact that all carrots and potatoes do not come from the grocery store.

“The Sauchie Gardening Group was formed last October by a few members who felt that Sauchie could do with a bit of a face lift and proceeded during the year to supply and maintain 27 barrels of flowers placed throughout the main street of Sauchie and plant 1,400 daffodil bulbs in green spaces.

“We have had a very positive response from the residents and businesses of the town and look forward to this next exciting project.

“Our sincere thank you to players of People’s Postcode Lottery and Postcode Local Trust for this generous funding and we look forward to proceeding with the garden to be located at 11 Mar Place Sauchie within the next few weeks.”
