THE ongoing demolition of Longannet Power Station continued today as coal stock towers were brought down with a controlled explosion.

At around 10am, both towers were "blown down" by ScottishPower contractor Brown & Mason along with a further structure known as Unit 2 Precips.

Longannet was closed by ScottishPower in 2016, as ScottishPower and parent company Iberdrola move towards a "stronger focus on renewable power".

In April this year, the contractors brought down a number of other structures with controlled explosions.

Around 220,000 hours have been spent by the firm carrying out waste removal at the plant so far, which used to be the biggest in Europe.

With demolition work still ongoing, more than 28,000 tonnes of material have been removed from site so far, with 98.5 per cent of this being recovered or recycled.
