TILLICOULTRY residents paid their respects to those who lost their lives in World War One at Remembrance events in the town on Sunday.

A service was held at the local Parish Church, then some of those who attended made their way to the Victoria Cross Memorial Garden.

Elizabeth Young, a member of the community council, had the idea to visit the Memorial.

She told the Advertiser: "About two years ago I started helping to weed the Victoria Cross Garden Memorial.

"There were two cousins who lived two streets apart from each other and both won the Victoria Cross – which was really rare – so the stones are there to commemorate the two cousins.

"Myself and Lt Colonel Imrie now help to look after it, and we thought we should lay a wreath there too since it was 100 years since the end of World War One."

Those who attended then made their way to the Devonvale Mills War Memorial to pay their respects there.

A service was also held at the town’s Cemetery and War Memorial, where large numbers of people gathered to pay tribute to those lost in the First World War.

In spite of the weather, large numbers of people turned out to the events.
