ALLOA residents turned out in full force to pay their respects to those lost during The Great War on Sunday.

Cadets, politicians, scouts, veterans and many more showed up to take part in the Remembrance event at the local war memorial.

A pipe band also played and marched through the town, and the streets were lined with members of the public who showed up to watch the display.

Jennie Syme, chair of Alloa Community Council, said: "It was particularly poignant that there was a good turn out at the Alloa War Memorial this year for the Remembrance Parade marking the 100 year Centenary of the end of the Great War.

"It is important we remember and pay our respects to the brave soldiers of the First World War, along with soldiers from more recent conflicts.

"The community council also laid a wreath at the Victoria Cross (VC) plaques by the South Africa War Memorial, to pay tribute to John Crawford Buchan who was awarded his VC for his courageous actions at the Somme on March 22, 1918.

"It was great to see representatives from all sectors of the community lay wreaths."

Representatives from Police Scotland, the fire service, the army cadets, the Air Training Corp, the scouts, Ludgate Parish Church and Clackmannanshire Council all laid wreaths during the service.

They were joined by Provost Tina Murphy, the Lord Lieutenant Johnny Stewart, the head boy and head girl at both Alloa and Lornshill academies and the family of the late Corporal Kevin Mulligan.

Keith Brown MSP, a former Royal Marine who attended the parade in Alloa and also laid a wreath, praised the high turnout on the day.

He said: “On Sunday, thousands of people young and old, came together at ceremonies across Clackmannanshire and Stirling to pay tribute to and remember those who sacrificed their lives in conflicts and wars, as well the service men and women who continue to put their lives at risk for the freedom we all enjoy.

“This year also marked the end of The Great War and communities across the area went the extra mile to commemorate Armistice Day.

“It was good to see such large turnouts at the ceremonies I attended in Alloa and Bridge of Allan and I would like to thank everyone who played a part in organising the events.”
