A SAUCHIE chippy is preparing to celebrate two decades of service in the community, by turning back the clocks in store.

The Bridge has been serving the community for two decades and staff there are always keen to honour their roots.

Alberto Jaconelli runs the takeaway with wife Domenica, dad Luigi, some committed staff and mum Angela helping the team behind the scenes.

He was in his 20s when the family took ownership of the shop and has been full of enthusiasm ever since.

Alberto said: “I don’t know where the last 20 years went to be honest.”

“The community embraced us right from the word go, it’s just been really nice.

“I joked sometimes with the youngsters when they came in, they could hardly see over the counter.

“Now they are adults, maybe with children themselves – it’s quite a thing when you’ve been involved in people’s lives for so long.”

The now 43-year-old himself started helping dad Luigi, who is also marking 45 years in business in 2018, when he was but 12 at the family’s then Glasgow chippy.

Even with all that experience behind him, Luigi still learns something new every day.

Alberto used to stand on a big empty milk crate at the Glasgow shop to reach over the counter when he served customers during school holidays.

And mused: “Dad promised me a bike if I helped him out for the summer.

“I’m still waiting on that bike; it never arrived.”

With their 20th anniversary approaching, and as a thank you to their customers, the award-winning family business will be rolling back their in-store prices to 1998.

A fish supper will cost £3.80 and a full price list from the past will be on display at the Main Street shop on the day.

Alberto added: “It’s a small community here, you get to know everybody and everybody gets to know you. The customers become your friends almost.

“It’s really the customers that keep me going. That’s the part of the job I enjoy the most: interacting with people.”

The shop prides itself in using the best ingredients around and customers have become a lot more conscious about what they eat, where it all comes from and how it has been produced over the past 20 years, according to the owners.

Indeed, Alberto and the team have received numerous awards over the years for their fish and chips, always made using fresh hand-filleted Scottish haddock – “the best in the world”.

The roll back of prices will apply on Wednesday, November 21, though deliveries prices will remain the same.
