A CLACKS rally driver has been nominated for a top industry award after just two years in the sport.

Ashleigh Morris has been nominated for a senior gold star by the British Women Racing Drivers Club (BWRDC) and will appear at the NEC in Birmingham this week to find out if she has won.

The Dollar-raised driver said the nomination came as a complete surprise to her given her short time in the sport and as a member of the club which she joined just a few months ago.

Ashleigh told the Advertiser: "I'm a member of the BWRDC and each year they award these gold stars to two women.

"The awards have just been changed this year to a junior and a senior, and unfortunately I am now considered a senior.

"There are three of us nominated in the senior category and we'll all appear at the NEC in Birmingham on Saturday where we'll all get our photos taken and everything before appearing on stage as they announce the winner."

Ashleigh, who now lives down south, will be up against Cathy Stewart and Jo Polley and will find out during the Autosport International Show.

The Wee County driver continued: "We have all submitted our CVs and they go to external judges which forms part of the result.

"I was absolutely delighted [to receive the nomination]. I only joined the club last year and only started racing in 2016, so overall I was so pleased to be just nominated."

While the old adage is being happy just to be nominated, Ashleigh insists coming out on top would be an almost unbelievable achievement for her.

She said: "It would mean the world to me. It would give a real boost to my career and it would so good to get recognition and to be identified in that way."

The winner of the gold star will also receive prizes from every sponsor which includes Walero, a firm which creates clothing for rally drivers, Racing Chocs and By Kathryn.

Ashleigh will find out her fate on January 12 in Birmingham.
