THE Speirs Centre car park in Alloa has reopened following a temporary closure.

The area was initially shut from noon on Sunday, January 13 until the evening of Friday, January 18.

Kingdom Housing Association (KHA) confirmed the closure was in place to allow for a site inspection to be carried out.

The organisation plans to bring social housing and residential parking to the brownfield land next to the site – located just off Primrose Street.

However, the initial car park opening date was then pushed back until the evening of Wednesday, January 23.

The area has since reopened providing some much needed parking spaces in the town centre ahead of the weekend.

The waste ground next to it remains closed, with staff on-site saying it is likely to reopen later today (Friday, January 25).

In August of last year, KHA revealed their plans for the area to members of the public.

They include erecting three and four story buildings on the site to create around 60 new homes, along with 25 parking spaces for residents behind the Drysdale Street commercial properties.

The proposals also include establishing a “high quality” open space next to the library, which could be used for civic events.

The council confirmed that an application for planning permission to commence the project has not yet been submitted.
