Residents in Easterhouse could soon be prescribed yoga sessions to benefit their mental and physical health.

A £1000 donation from SNP MSP Ivan McKee’s Enterprising Povan charity has funded YoGlasgow! to run 10 sessions of therapeutic community yoga.

Based in the Phoenix Centre in Easterhouse, experienced yoga teachers will be working with local people who have been referred by their GP or community links practitioner.

The sessions start in March and will run for 10 weeks.

The many mental and physical benefits of practicing yoga are well known. Now GPs in Easterhouse can prescribe a few sessions on the mat as a treatment option.

Mr McKee said: “This is a highly innovative approach to health and wellbeing that I hope will bring real health benefits to people in the East End.”

Mick Gallagher, director of YoGlasgow! added: “There’s a misconception that yoga is just a nice pastime for the wellheeled.

But it has huge potential health benefits as many sportspeople, among Ivan McKee MSP others, will attest.”
