THE man behind the creation of a popular new feature in Gwynedd has been given the opportunity of a life time and tasked with creating a piece for a hit TV series.

Simon O'Rourke has become an internet sensation for his 'Y Draig Dderw' (Oak Dragon) sculpture located near Tregarth.

Such was the popularity of his design, carved out of a 200-year-old oak tree, that North Wales Police had to warn motorists "not to slow down" when driving near it - as it was grabbing their attention and putting other drivers at risk.

Following on from the success of his dragon, Simon, who is from Wrexham, has now been commissioned as one of 18 artists worldwide who will be designing promotion pieces for the final season of Game of Thrones.

"HBO (producers of the show) approached me and asked me to make something new from a piece of the show's history," Simon explained.

"I have been working on the dragon eggs from the show. The brief was to create a casing for the eggs as if they were being gifted to Daenerys for the first time."

Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones has several plots and a large ensemble cast. It is HBO's most popular series ever, with the season seven finale reaching over 16 million viewers.

The eighth series of the fantasy drama is set to hit our screens on April 14.
