A BIRD box building event was held in Alloa at the weekend in honour of National Nest Box Week.

RSPB Scotland Black Devon Wetlands invited Wee County residents to join them in building the birds in their garden a lovely home, just in time for laying eggs and rearing their chicks.

Held at the wetlands on Saturday, February 16, a number of people turned up along with their children to take part in the free event while also taking the opportunity to look for wildlife on the pools.

The event showcased much of the exciting work that has been taking place at the reserve including the pools, spectacular viewing screen, boardwalks, paths and seating, was part of an IFLI project funded by the National Lottery.

Black Devon Wetlands is made up of a mix of wetland habitats, so is a perfect place to see wildfowl and waders. There is always something exciting to discover on this new reserve and a perfectly situated right on the edge of Alloa and in the heart of the Inner Forth.

National Nest Box Week is an established part of the ornithological calendar. Running for a week from February 14 each year, the week provides a welcome focus on nesting birds and encourages everyone to put up nest boxes in their local area to support the conservation of our breeding birds.

National Nest Box Week was established and developed by BTO and Britain’s leading bird care specialist Jacobi Jayne. It takes place at a time when tradition has it that small birds pair up ahead of the breeding season.
