A WEE COUNTY painter and decorator will soon be on his way to Russia after earning himself a place in the "Skills Olympics" later this year.

Aged just 21, Callum Bonner has already racked up a huge list of accolades within his profession.

These include winning a Special Clackmannanshire Council award in 2018, and an Outstanding Achievement Award from Forth Valley College (FVC) the same year.

The Tullibody resident also recently completed a four-year Modern Apprenticeship at FVC's Falkirk Campus – and has been labelled an "inspiration" to other students.

Now, after making it through selection in Ireland, it was announced on Monday, March 11, the young man will be competing for the UK at the WorldSkills competition in Kazan, Russia, in August.

Held every two years, WorldSkills – known as the "Skill Olympics" - hosts the world championships of skills, attracting competitors from over 60 countries.

The event allows young people from all corners of the globe to get together and compete for a prestigious medal in their chosen skill.

Callum will be competing in the painting and decorating competition.

Commenting on his success, Callum said: "My journey has been phenomenal and I have enjoyed being in training and going to team selection to see if I could get picked to go and represent the UK as the only painter to go to Kazan in Russia for the world competition."

He was also keen to praise FVC for the education it had given him, adding: "[FVC] can push you to reach your maximum potential and if you are wanting to put the graft in, you will reap the benefits."
