AROUND 9,000 people from the wider constituency area surrounding the Wee County have signed a growing petition to revoke Article 50 amid Brexit uncertainty.

The petition, understood to be the most-signed in history with close to 5.5million at the time of writing, is urging residents to show their support for staying in the European Union and is ultimately hoping for a parliamentary debate on the issue.

Having started back in February, it surged in popularity after it became evident the UK would not be able to meet its March 29 deadline for its exit from the EU as MPs could not agree a deal to take it forward.

It passed the 4.5m mark as an estimated one million people descended on London at the weekend, with thousands travelling from Scotland overnight, for the People’s Vote march.

A million more have put their names on the list since.

In the Ochil and South Perthshire constituency, which has a Conservative representative in MP Luke Graham, just under 9,000 people have signed at the time of writing.

This represents around nine per cent of the about 100,000 strong base of voters – the national turnout in the original 2016 referendum was 72.2 per cent.

The petition is straightforward in directly asking the government to revoke Article 50, the mechanism by which member states can leave the EU.

It said: “The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'.

“We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU.

“A People's Vote may not happen - so vote now.”

On June 23 in 2016, the UK voted 17.4m against 16.1m to leave the EU.
