MORE than 100 people flocked to Tilly Park for an annual charity touch rugby tournament this month.

The event was organised by Hillfoots Rugby Club for the third time on Saturday, May 18, and saw nine teams take part from around the Forth Valley in a good-natured and family-friendly competition.

A now regular feature in the local rugby calendar, the tournament raised funds for Prostate Scotland, a charity close to the heart of many people associated with the club.

The fun did not stop on the pitch either as it was the shorts and shades disco in the evening that brought the cash in with around £2,500 raised on the day.

That takes to total netted for the good cause to more than £7,600.

Hillfoots RFC gave thanks to sponsors, including Energy Assets, Delta Financial Systems, McCulloch Contractors and headline supporters Alloa Rotary Club.

Alistair Spowage, president of the local Rotary, said: "As sponsors, we are delighted that such a fantastic sum was raised for Prostate Scotland, a cause which means a lot to us, and would like to congratulate Hillfoots Rugby Club for hosting and running such a good humoured family event which is now in its third year."

Beneficiaries Prostate Scotland also gave thanks, with the organisation's Mae Bell adding: "Prostate Scotland would like to sincerely thank Hillfoots Rugby Football Club for continuing to support Prostate Scotland.

"More than £7,600 has now been raised by Hillfoots over the past three years – a tremendous amount.

"This enables Prostate Scotland to reach many more men and their families throughout Scotland with information and to raise awareness.

"With almost 1 in 2 men over 50 at risk of developing prostate disease and 1 in 10 men at risk of developing prostate cancer, the Hillfoots RFC tournament is a huge help towards tackling prostate disease and prostate cancer."

Touch rugby is a simplified version of the game with no tackling, allowing people of all ages and abilities to take part.

The local club runs a family-oriented touch rugby evening every Thursday at Tilly Park from 7pm over the summer with new participants – young and old, male and female – welcome.
