THE plaudits keep on coming for Wee County sports star Lewis McDermid, whose achievements were celebrated once again earlier this month.

The Clacks lad was honoured at the Scottish Learning Disability Awards, where he was named winner in the Sports Achievement category at a ceremony held in Edinburgh on Friday, May 17.

This time he was honoured for his success with the Forth Valley Flyer group, an athletics club for people over the age of 10 with physical, sensory or learning disabilities in central Scotland.

Speaking after the ceremony, Lewis said: “I am delighted to have won the Sport Achievement category at the Scottish Learning Disability Awards and I am very grateful for the support I have had from the Forth Valley Flyers.

"When I am doing sports I feel more confident, relaxed and happy, and it has been very important for me in feeling more included.

"I hope that more people with learning disabilities become involved with sport and that more support is given to allow them to do so.”

The Scottish Learning Disability Awards exist to showcase the talents and achievements of people with learning disabilities, and the people who work with and for them.

The award category recognised people with learning disabilities who made a positive difference to themselves and others through sport.

Charlie McMillan, SCLD chief executive, added: “The Scottish Commission for Learning Disability is delighted to host the Scottish Learning Disability Awards.

"The awards recognise the talents and achievements of people with learning disabilities, and the people who work with and for them.

"Lewis is a perfect example of this, and he thoroughly deserves his award. His achievements highlight the contribution that people with learning disabilities can make to their community when they are given the right opportunities and support to realise their hopes and ambitions.
