JIM Goodwin believes Liam Buchanan can fire the Wasps up the Championship table as he revealed he was on the cusp of adding several new additions.

The Irishman made the former Wasp his first signing of the window as he secured the services of the 34-year-old following his release from Raith Rovers.

Buchanan enjoyed a successful spell at the Recs first time around when he found the net 17 times, including a memorable strike in the side's 2-2 draw against Rangers at Ibrox.

Goodwin told Advertiser Sport: "I was delighted to get Liam in and have actually tried to sign him the last three seasons.

"He's an excellent character and a good experienced head who will fit in well to the dressing room with the boys who are already there.

"So we are really pleased to get him in the door and if we can add similar quality and mindset to the group then that will be great.

"He certainly knows where the goal is, that's for sure. We didn't have a striker of the 15 goal mark last year.

"But we need to add as many goals to the team as we can and that's what we are trying to do."

Goodwin revealed he and his backroom staff were currently looking at players in Scotland and south of the border as they look to build on their successful Championship season.

The 37-year-old believes this is the "toughest market" Alloa have had to compete in during his time at the club but told Advertiser Sport he hoped to confirm several new additions this week.

He said: "We are waiting to hear back from one or two boys and hope to hear back by Wednesday.

"I've told one player I need a decision by then and hope to be able to firm that up soon.

"The loan market is something we are already looking at and I have already identified several targets.

"I have made contact with the clubs and it's really just a waiting game now.

"We've had a decent time in the loan market and if I can get the ones I want then I believe they can make us stronger.

"The important thing for me is to do even better than last season as there's no point in standing still."
