THE streets of Alloa were filled with supporters when the Orange Walk came to town at the weekend.

Celebrating the Battle of the Boyne, the parade took place on Saturday, July 8, and saw more than 70 bands and orangemen march through the streets.

It largely went past without incidents, only one person was taken into custody.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the Advertiser: "Police Scotland supported the safe facilitation of an event in Alloa on Saturday, July 8.

“A 45-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with disorderly conduct. He received a fixed penalty notice and [was] later released.

“Officers would also like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation as this event took place."

In preparation for the Protestant event, which started at the West End Park with a gathering and ended in the same place, a number of roads were closed to traffic, in effect placing a few streets under lock down.

Buses were also diverted through Sauchie, but the town centre was still accessible.

Jim McHarg, grand master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland, told the Advertiser the event was “fantastic”.

He said: “Everything seemed to go pretty well, a very good report from the police, everybody seemed to enjoy themselves – obviously the weather helps. All in all a very successful day.”

The grand master thanked the Central Scotland County Grand Lodge for organising the parade, its grand master and the executive for putting the work into the planning, Clackmannanshire Council and Police Scotland with whom there have been numerous meetings and those who came out and supported the event.

The event is likely to return to Alloa in more than a decade as the 14 lodges of the region take turns organising it in their home towns each year.
