AN ALLOA care home manager soldiered on despite a knee injury to conquer Ben Nevis and raise funds for charity with her staff and colleagues.

Parklands Care Home boss Janet Stoddart was roped in by activity co-ordinator Gillian Buckley and colleague Samantha Dougan to scale the UK's highest mountain with staff from three other Meallmore homes.

They smashed their target and raised more than £1,000 for Alzheimer Scotland, which supports people with dementia – something a number of care home residents are affected by.

Gillian said: “We had great weather and a great view most of the way up the mountain.

“Our manager Janet suffered a knee injury, but managed to soldier on for the cause.

“We met some interesting people on our journey and another charity raising money for meals for homeless people.

“It took us a while to complete the climb, but we all felt a sense of accomplishment once we reached the top.”

Manager Janet added: “It was great, I am glad I did it, but never again.”

Joining the staff from Parklands was Devon Butcher from Airthrey Care Home in Airth, William Cawley from The Oaks in Glasgow and many others, including colleagues from Antonine House in Bearsden.

Devon said: “I did it because I knew it would be a challenge and I wanted to give something back to the people who have Alzheimer's.”

William added: “I wanted to raise money for a great, caring cause while enjoying the company and comradery of colleagues and fellow caring people, supporting the effort and commitment made by Alzheimer Scotland.”

Tagging along with the group was photographer Iain Robertson who captured stunning views from the 1,345metre (4,411ft) peak – he was praised for his help in gathering support and donating his time and skills.

Gillian was glad the whole company could be part of the fundraising drive, if not by coming along, then by giving their support and donating cash.

And she added: “Without the support of the residents, families, friends and staff at Parklands and the other homes it would not have been possible to get the result we did.

“We look forward to doing it all over again next year for a different charity.”
