A ROADSHOW encouraging parents to consider their driving behaviour made a pit stop in Alloa.

As part of the ‘Kids in the Car’ campaign from the Scottish Government and Road Safety Scotland, Clackmannanshire parents and carers were urged to consider the influence their driving habits can have on our future motorists.

Parking up at Asda last Friday (4 July), visitors picked up hints and tips on curbing speeding and amber gambling. Children were also able to express their artistic talents and drew what they see when a grown-up is behind the wheel.

Mairi Blair, assistant director at Road Safety Scotland, said, “We all think we’re good drivers, but when the pressures of daily life begin to creep in, whether it’s rushing for a pick-up or getting back for family teatime, people act in ways they usually wouldn’t.

“The roadshow provides the perfect opportunity for us to interact one-on-one with parents and carers, to make them more aware of their behaviour behind the wheel and give them the opportunity to see, first-hand, how these behaviours are being picked up by their children.” Neale Kinnear, a chartered psychologist in the study of human behaviour and transport at TRL, added, “Our future drivers are always listening and learning. The biggest influence on their future behaviour and social development is of course their parents in the front seat.

“The roadshows aim to actively engage with both kids and their parents, creating mutual awareness of how parents’ driving behaviour can influence their child’s driving behaviour in the future.

“By highlighting this relationship now, we can all give our children the best possible start when they finally learn to drive.” For more information on the campaign, check out www.dontriskit.info.
